HEY! WE'RE DREW & MOLLIE ADAMS
When you are an entrepreneur, you can sometimes feel like you are the farthest possible distance away from a corporate american job. While you may like where you are at, and the freedom that being an entrepreneur provides you, there are still some things that corporate american companies do that are actually pretty nice. Allow us to explain. Here are 13 things that we actually like about Corporate America, in no particular order!
1. Consistent Pay
This one sort of speaks for itself! With more straightforward roles and larger companies, comes more even and straightforward pay. This is nice for budgeting and goal setting, as you don’t have to worry about if you have a bad month, or what to do with excess cash if you have a good month. It’s all the same!
2. Healthcare
In America, the cost of healthcare is high. I think all of us know that. A lot of companies, if you are a full time employee, cover the cost of your health insurance premiums. This is very convenient and on the inverse side, paying for those premiums on your own can be expensive and difficult to do.
3. Retirement
Similar to healthcare, many companies will set up 401K retirement accounts and may even match some of your contributions. This is amazing when you consider how hard it is to save for retirement on your own.
4. Processes
This one can be a double edged sword… We will talk about the good processes. Sometimes, having some process to protect employees and make things run smoother is actually effective. The
5. Resources
Most of the time, larger companies have the resources for things like training courses, hiring help when they need it, and of course, workplace snacks.
6. Boundaries
As entrepreneurs, we all know the feeling of always working. The work never stops! With a large company, usually your role’s scope is more narrow, allowing you to get your work done and log off for the day.
7. Team / Social / comradery
This one can be true anywhere you go, but usually at a large company, you have one or more teammates that you interact with daily. This helps stave off loneliness and creates a bond with your coworkers, as you are going through the same job, together.
8. Sense of security
When you work in a larger company, there can be a sense of security that your paycheck will always be there, as long as you do your job. It is nice to feel that sometimes, because being an entrepreneur is very different!
9. Place of work
Having a dedicated spot to work, no matter where it is, is always helpful for creating boundaries and focusing on the task at hand. Most of the time, large corporate companies have a dedicated office or location you can come to to get work done and collaborate.
10. Diversity of thought from personal experience.
If a company cares enough, they will attempt to hire people with different backgrounds and with different approaches to challenges based on their live experiences. This is a huge benefit! Seeing perspectives that are different than yours is so helpful for broadening your outlook.
11. Opportunity to travel and experience cultures.
I know you can prioritize travel on your own or within your own small business, but having a company pay for you to travel is a nice benefit! I (Drew) went to China five times with one of my old companies. It was wonderful to make friends and learn from people in a completely different culture than my own.
12. Zooming into how things are made.
Getting to see how things (both physical and metaphorical) are put together, whether it be a water bottle, a computer, an app or a curriculum, it is a great benefit to be up close and personal to the creation of a product.
13. Leave / PTO
Getting to go on leave without worrying about losing your job, or being paid while you are still on vacation, is one of the great benefits of having a corporate job. Getting to hang up work for a chosen period of time is really nice, as you don’t have to worry about it as much as you do while working for yourself.
