HEY! WE'RE DREW & MOLLIE ADAMS
Ever wonder how you get to where you want to be? Sorry for asking such a cliché question! And no, I’m not trying to click bait you. I really want to know! You see the end goal, and think to yourself… “How the heck do I get my business there?” The short answer is that success looks different for everyone. BUT there are some tips and tricks to help you along your journey. Today, we talk just about those tips and tricks on the Let’s Venture Podcast. Our guest Brandon Downer, is the co-founder of Pinks Window Services in Austin, TX. We sat down with him to talk all about how to scale your business and what it takes to set your small business up for financial success.
Born from Necessity
As I’m sure a lot of us can relate to, Brandon and his co-founder Carter were furloughed from their full time jobs in March of 2020. This created a window of opportunity for them. They had a summer to do what they wanted! While on a walk (because what else were you supposed to do during quarantine), they got to talking about business. During that conversation, they noticed that the only vehicles outside of homes were trades people / service providers. There were plumbers, electricians, contractors, etc. They were all still at work! That got the guys thinking. What could we do? They settled on window cleaning! After a $100 Home Depot haul, they had the supplies they needed and went home to see if this was something they could actually see themselves doing.
Know Your Lane
Brandon and Carter had noticed a gap in their market. They noticed that there was a need for quality service people. People who show up on time, and do what they say they are going to do. This was the foundation of their new venture. They also knew that they weren’t plumbers and they weren’t electricians. They had the humility to know their lane and commit to being excellent. Spoiler alert, this pays off later on.
Hustle Hard / Live Scrappy
As Pink’s got off the ground, Brandon and Carter scaled their business by hustling hard and living scrappy. They worked every cleaning job themselves, earned every dollar they made, and lived scrappy, investing cash back into the business. It’s important to note that they did pay themselves and made this opportunity into something that they could go after sustainably.
Be Smart with Cash
The guys also were smart with their cash. They established a “New Zero” where instead of viewing $0.00 as “Zero” they saved 6 months of operating expenses, which represents their “New Zero”. This decision, in addition to other conservative cash decisions, helped Brandon and Carter scale their business with no debt, and not look back as Pink’s grew!
